Can You Buy a Vignette in Advance? Start-Date Rules by Country

You rarely have to buy at the border. Most countries let you purchase early and choose when the vignette activates — but the advance window differs.

How far ahead, by country

Slovakia lets you set the start up to 60 days ahead. The Czech Republic, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania allow up to about 30 days. Hungary is the exception: it does not support a future start date at all — a Hungarian vignette is always valid from the moment you buy it, so you cannot buy “for next week,” only for when you are ready to be covered.

Why it helps

Setting a future start date means your vignette is live the moment you cross the border, with no scramble at a kiosk and no risk of an unpaid stretch. It also lets you line up several countries’ vignettes before a trip in one sitting.

One caution

Pick the start date carefully — for short vignettes a wrong date can leave you covered on the wrong days. And the plate you enter must match the car exactly.
