6 Vignette Mistakes That Get Drivers Fined

Most fines are not bad luck — they are one of a few repeat mistakes. Avoid these.
- A typo in the plate. The vignette is linked to your plate; an O instead of a 0 means no valid vignette for the car you are driving. Check your confirmation against the car.
- Wrong country code. Entering the wrong registration country is the same problem — the system sees a different plate.
- The wrong Slovenian class. Slovenia’s 2A/2B is by height above the front axle, not overall height. Guess wrong and it reads as unpaid.
- The Bulgarian noon rule. The weekend vignette starts at 12:00 on Friday, not Friday morning. Drive early and you are uncovered.
- Assuming an EV is automatically exempt. In the Czech Republic a foreign EV must register the exemption in advance — “it is electric” is not a defence at the camera.
- Buying after you are caught. In several countries a late purchase does not cancel a fine already recorded. Buy before the border.
