Across vignette countries, enforcement is automatic and the maths is simple: the fine is far higher than the vignette would have cost.
Cameras, not checkpoints
Most countries use automatic plate-recognition cameras at motorway entries and on gantries. There is no booth to slip past — your plate is read and checked against the database in seconds.
Buying late does not save you
In several countries, purchasing a vignette after an offence has already been recorded does not cancel the fine. And fines reach the hundreds of euros — many times the price of even an annual vignette.
Foreign plates are not safe either
Cross-border enforcement means a fine can follow a foreign-registered car home. The safe move is simple: buy before you cross the border, and double-check the plate you enter.
