A common and costly assumption is that a short motorway hop does not count. In vignette countries, it does — the cameras do not care how far you drive.
Even short stretches count
A few kilometres on a motorway is enough to require a valid vignette. The Bratislava bypass in Slovakia is the classic example — drivers cross it in minutes and get fined for having no vignette. The same applies to short transit sections in most vignette countries.
Use the shortest duration
For a quick crossing, buy the shortest vignette available — many countries now offer a 1-day option (Slovakia, Bulgaria and others added one recently), which makes brief transits cheap and legal.
Plan border-to-border
If your route clips the corner of a country, check whether that stretch is a tolled motorway. If it is, a 1-day or short vignette is far cheaper than the fine.
