A multi-country drive crosses several tolling systems, and each border is a fresh requirement. Here is the short checklist by country.

Vignette countries — buy before each border

The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania each need their own digital vignette linked to your plate — one country’s vignette never covers another. Switzerland needs its annual vignette even for a short visit.

Toll-box and barrier countries

If your route dips into Italy, France, Spain, Portugal or Croatia, those use barrier tolls — one EETS toll box covers all five.

Easy-to-miss extras

The Karawanke Tunnel (Austria–Slovenia) and several Austrian alpine sections (Brenner, Tauern, Arlberg) carry separate section tolls on top of any vignette. The Danube bridge between Romania and Bulgaria is a separate toll too.

The plan

List your countries in order, get a vignette for each vignette country (pick the shortest duration that covers your days), add a toll box if you are going south, and budget separately for the tunnel and bridge tolls above.
