Hungary uses a digital vignette (e-matrica) linked to your number plate, required on motorways for motorcycles and vehicles up to 3.5 t. Its standout feature is instant activation — useful if you are buying right before the border.
Durations
The national vignette comes in four lengths: 1-day, 10-day (weekly), monthly, and annual. A few quirks to know:
- The 1-day is valid only until 23:59 on the chosen day — not 24 hours from purchase. Buy it for the evening and it still expires at midnight.
- The 10-day runs the start day plus nine more — ten consecutive days.
- The annual runs to 31 January of the following year, so a January purchase covers about 13 months.
Hungary is also the only country with county (megye) vignettes — cheaper, but valid only within one county. They are good for staying local (around Lake Balaton, say), not for cross-country transit, where the national vignette is the safe choice.
No future start date
Unlike most neighbours, Hungary does not let you pick a future start date — the vignette is valid the moment you buy it. You cannot buy “for next week”; buy it when you are ready to be covered.
Motorcycles and motorhomes pay too
Motorcycles are NOT exempt in Hungary — a vignette is mandatory for motorcycles and vehicles up to 3.5 t (the opposite of Slovakia). From 1 January 2026 a vignette is also required for all motorhomes.
Enforcement
Camera-based plate recognition. Make sure the plate and country code are entered exactly — a typo is the usual cause of a wrongly issued fine, and your proof of purchase is your only defence. If you enter a toll road by mistake, there is a 60-minute grace window to buy before a fine is issued.
