Switzerland Motorway Vignette 2026 — Why It's Annual Only

Switzerland is unusual: there are no short-term vignettes. Whether you are there for two days or all year, you buy the annual vignette. It is required for all vehicles up to 3.5 t on motorways and national roads.

One option, long window

Only the annual exists (the price has been stable at CHF 40 for years). Its validity window is generous: from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year — about 14 months. There is no daily or weekly alternative; a short-term vignette was rejected in a national vote years ago.

The trailer rule

A caravan or trailer needs its own separate vignette — one vehicle, one vignette. Towing without a second vignette is treated the same as having none.

Enforcement

It is available as a sticker or as an e-vignette linked to the plate. Police and border officers check; driving without one means an on-the-spot fine plus the cost of the vignette. Note that two tunnels (Grand St. Bernard, Munt la Schera) charge separately; the Gotthard road tunnel is covered.
